Online talk about Maggie Victoria
I’m pleased to be discussing my series The Garden of Maggie Victoria in a January 2025 online talk hosted by the Women in Photography group of the Royal Photographic Society.
This series of digital collages restores the story of my great-grandmother, forgotten within my family after her premature death in 1943. It integrates archival photos, letters and other found materials with my own contemporary, nature-oriented images made in Vancouver, Canada.
I’ll share how I pieced together Maggie Victoria’s story and made sense of a handful of letters written close to her death. I’ll also cover how one woman’s seemingly ordinary story can have a wider resonance; the challenges of working with incomplete materials; and the thorny question of “truth” in making art from someone else’s story.
The talk takes place on 21st January, 2025 at 1900 GMT/1400 EST/1100 PST.
This event is free for RPS Women in Photography members, and there is a small fee for non-members.
