September issue of WE ARE Magazine out now
Tuesday 10th September sees the launch of another issue of WE ARE Magazine, my second as editor.
I'm delighted to say that its 184 pages house an array of fresh perspectives and work from talented female photographers around the world.
Thanks to an expanded team of volunteers from the Royal Photographic Society's Women in Photography group, we've been able to spend some time finessing the magazine and its contents.
The September 2024 issue has an elegant new design that truly allows our contributors' work to shine. We also have two new collaborative features that allow our members to easily share their insights and expertise. "One Thing I Know" contains collective wisdom on lessons learned via photography. "Favourite Photobooks" allows our members to spread the word about excellent books by female photographers.
New generation
You'll find a wide range of work in this issue. Among them, Sujata Setia gives us a behind the scenes look at her acclaimed series "A Thousand Cuts", which sheds light on survivors of domestic abuse in the South Asian community in the UK. Elsewhere, Vicky Martin uses striking and witty portraiture to turn the gendered narratives of fairy tales on their head.
Documentary photographer Margaret Mitchell thoughtfully describes how she went about making As The Day Closes, in which she explores the stories of people who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Inspired by her own experiences, Monika Mabiki connects with women of colour who find solace in nature, and creates breathtaking images of rejuvenation and liberation. There are many more pieces besides.
Wanting to call attention to a new generation of photographers, we’ve launched the feature "Student Focus" in which we profile a current or recent student. And in "Path to Distinction", we’re starting to shed light on what it takes to receive an RPS distinction — and hope to profile a recent recipient every issue from now on.
