“If We Had Met” (2024) by Rachel Nixon.
“If We Had Met” from my collage series The Garden of Maggie Victoria is the subject of a photo critique in the April 1st issue of Amateur Photographer magazine in the UK.
I really appreciated Maria Falconer’s commentary about the piece, in particular my departure from the fixed moment in time that photography often represents: “In reality, time and photography occupy a more interactive continuum where past, present, and future may all reside. Rachel Nixon... exploits this abstract arena in her image ‘If We Had Met’ where she reimagines time in a poetic and meaningful way.”
In “If We Had Met”, I’m imagining a scenario where perhaps my great-grandmother and I might have met and bonded over the family love of photography. It features a very young me with my toy Fisher Price camera, interrupting Maggie Victoria showing two of her children a lantern slide. The text reads: “The photographic rambles begin tomorrow,” extracted from one of her letters.
