I’m over the moon to have had one of my images selected for photoED magazine's gorgeous Botanicals issue for WINTER 2022/23!
The Winter 2022/23 edition, curated by gallerist Peppa Martin of The Commotion, is in print now, and features beautiful botanical images from contemporary artists across Canada.
My image, "A Slow Speed", can be found on the Contents page. This image is part of my personal project, "The Garden of Maggie Victoria", which aims to honour and restore the legacy of my great-grandmother. She died of a fast-moving illness at an early age in 1943. After her death she was barely ever mentioned within the family and my great-grandfather Frank remarried less than a year later.
This image features an archive image of Maggie Victoria taken by Frank in her garden, along with a contemporary image by me and part of a letter written not long before her death.
Maggie Victoria was proud of the garden she and her husband created at their home in Lancashire, England. In this letter to Gladys, her eldest daughter, we see the first signs of her failing health. She talks of her speed working in the garden being only “a slow one to-day”. Maggie Victoria would take her last breath a month later.
